Ranked No. 23 in the latest ACHA Division 1 poll, the Missouri State Ice Bears swept the No. 12 ranked University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos on Friday, Oct. 23 and Saturday, Oct. 24 at Mediacom Ice Park. It’s the second and third victories over UCO dating back to the 2005-06 season and the first sweep of a Division 1 team at home in club history.
Both teams played in Oklahoma City on Sept. 18-19 with the Bronchos winning the weekend by scores of 6-3 and 2-1. Missouri State is currently riding a 6-game winning with consecutive victories Oct. 7-8 over the University of Alabama in Pelham, Alabama and Oct. 16-17 at home against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
The Ice Bears earned their first victories in team history as a Division 1 club over Alabama, also a Division 1 hockey program, by scores of 7-2 and 3-2. During the Ice Bears? third annual ?Pink the Rink? hockey games Oct. 16-17, Missouri State won 5-4 in overtime and 9-3 over the Cougars in front a large home crowd.
Early scheduling had the Ice Bears playing Central Oklahoma, Iowa State and Colorado (all ranked in the top 12) during the first four coaches? polls. Rankings from now through the end of the season are computer based and strength of schedule has been a factor in Missouri State?s latest position. The top 20 teams qualify for the ACHA Division 1 National Championship held March 3-8, 2016 in Bensenville, Illinois.
